The Inevitable Lightness

The roads and everything on them fly up and dissolve
a net rises from the world
the cobweb in which it was dying
and the earth breathes naked with its new scars
and sky everywhere

Yesterday morning I woke to a different sound on the pavement below: Foot strikes. Lots of them.

Chasing the Bird

The sun sets unevenly and the people
go to bed.

The night has a thousand eyes.
The clouds are low, overhead.

Every night it is a little bit
more difficult, a little

harder. My mind
to me a mangle is.

The Happy Man

Who would love you
if you were not six

feet tall, a ruddy face, a
smiling face. You

would walk all night, all
night, and no one, no one

would look at you.

at night

Gael Monfils vs. Rafael Nadal. Last night at the US Open. They were both playing on another planet. Really. It totally re-energized my love for the sport.

seis poemas

New Susana Baca CD available today: Seis Poemas.

Six poetic songs for $6.99.

Hearing Susana's voice on the radio for the first time remains one of my most vivid memories, almost 10 years later. Please give this new CD a listen.

Eco de Sombras is another Susana Baca CD I highly (highly) recommend. For more on Susana Baca, click here.

new blog

Welcome to search for the new land.

The title comes from a song written by trumpeter Lee Morgan (right). One of my all-time favorite jazz recordings, and I think fitting for the kinds of posts to follow.

There's still a lot I'm not sure about, including just how often I'll keep up with it. But I'll try to share what's special. What's elusive. And some random stuff, too. What I'm searching for, what I'm finding.

Part of the search began about two years ago, with a project entitled A Thousand Stories. It's a documentary that features the artists of today. Through an interview and storytelling process I try to touch on the mystery of creativity, and reveal what's on the minds of these brilliant musicians, poets, illustrators, painters, and more.

So I'll let you know when new stories are posted on the website. Even with the new blog, I'm still going to keep the diary page on the site; perhaps saving it for very special entries of one kind or another.

Hope you enjoy,
{gregory}
